Change of steady state and saturation of oxygen and nitrite during sequential short-term exposures of a soil ecosystem to NaNO2.
This study investigated the temporal change of the steady state and saturation of oxygen and nitrite in a soil system using a series of sequential short-term exposures to NaNO2. On each test day, 10 ml of 0, 5, 10, 20, or 50 mM NaNO2 was injected into 50 ml of the soil system. After a 4-h equilibration period, samples of soil, sediment, and water were collected every 0.5 h to 0.5 h. The daily average concentration of NO2-N was calculated for each treatment and the number of exposures required to achieve a certain level of NO2-N was determined. On the basis of the data for daily average NO2-N concentration and the number of NaNO2 exposure days, a mathematical model was developed to describe the temporal change of steady state NO2-N levels. The results of this study demonstrate that the steady state NO2-N level of the soil system is reached within 2 h of adding NaNO2, and the NO2-N saturation level is reached after 4 h. The NO2-N saturation level of the soil system increased with the level of added NaNO2, but was independent of the number of NaNO2 exposures on a given day. Model-predicted NO2-N saturation levels reached or exceeded the NO2-N saturation level of the 10 mM NaNO2 exposure treatments on most of the days studied.
