Visual cortex undergoes protracted postnatal development with continuing structural and functional refinements over several months. In mature cortical circuits, transient activity-dependent synaptic plasticity modulates signal processing, information storage, and learning. It is also regulated by neuromodulators. The present study was aimed at investigating the early development of activity-dependent synaptic plasticity in vivo and in vitro using perineuronal nets (PNNs) as a marker of early developmental plasticity.
